Struggling to pass Functional Skills maths is rarely about ability.
It is usually the result of weak foundations, exam anxiety, or poor revision technique.
The assessments focus on practical skills such as:
Percentages
Fractions
Ratios and interpreting data.
These are the same Skills that Count required across care, retail, logistics, construction and professional training routes.
For example, increasing £40 by 15% can be done by finding 10 percent (£4) and 5 percent (£2) and adding the results to give £46.
40 + 4 + 2 = 46
How did we find the 6?
Step 1: Find 10% divide 40 by 10
Step 2: Find 5%, when 10% is 4, and half of 10 is 5, "neat cheat", half of 4 will be 2
Step 3: Adding the 10% and 5% is the same as adding the 4 and 2
Step 4: 10% + 5% =15% the same as adding the 4 and 2
Step 5: 40 + 6 = 46
Result: £40 +15% = £46
Try it for yourself:
