A Practical Look at Pay, Tax and National Insurance.
Many adults think overtime is not worth doing because “tax takes it all”.
In reality, the numbers usually show the opposite.
Today’s example shows how 1 to 2 hours of overtime a day can make a real difference to your Christmas pay packet.
This example uses simple, realistic figures and builds the Skills that Count.
Step 1: Your normal pay
Hourly rate: £12 Hours per day: 8 Weekly pay (before deductions):8 × £12 = £96 per day
£96 × 5 days = £480 per week
Step 2: Overtime rate
Many Christmas overtime shifts pay time and a half.
Overtime rate = £12 × 1.5 = £18 per hour
If you work 1 hour of overtime a day for 5 days:5 × £18 = £90 extra per week
If you work 2 hours of overtime a day:10 × £18 = £180 extra per week
Step 3: Consider tax and National Insurance
For simple Functional Skills calculations, use these rounded figures:
Income tax: 20%National Insurance: 8%
Total deductions: 28%
Now, you need to be able to work out a percentage of an amount.

Step 4: Your real take-home pay from overtime
1 hour overtime per day.
Overtime earned: £90
Deductions: 28% of £90 = £25.20
Take-home overtime:
£90 − £25.20 = £64.80 extra per week
2 hours overtime per day.
Overtime earned: £180
Deductions: 28% of £180 = £50.40
Take-home overtime:
£180 − £50.40 = £129.60 extra per week
Step 5: Is it worthwhile?
Even after tax and National Insurance, you keep more than two-thirds of your overtime pay!
Over a four-week Christmas period:
1 hour per day overtime:£64.80 × 4 = £259.20 extra
2 hours per day overtime:£129.60 × 4 = £518.40 extra
If you can get any overtime in, it seems worthwhile.
Check your personal circumstances; you now know how to work it out yourself.
So, most overtime pay does not disappear into taxes.
A small increase in daily hours can make a clear and meaningful difference to your Christmas pay packet.
These are practical Skills that Count when planning your December budget.
