Best Value Gift Wrap Using Surface Area and Unit Pricing, Skills that Count.

This is a Level 2 calculation that applies directly to everyday spending.

Area and cost, all wrapped up...
Area and cost, all wrapped up...

Gift wrap is a classic Christmas expense, and many people struggle to judge which roll offers the best value.

Today’s activity uses surface area and unit pricing to help you understand which option gives you more wrapping for your money. These are practical Skills that Count.

A shop sells two rolls of wrapping paper.

Roll A: £3.00 for a roll measuring 4 metres long and 70 centimetres wide

Roll B: £2.40 for a roll measuring 3 metres long and 1 metre wide

You want to know which provides the best value per square metre.

Step 1:

Convert all measures into metres

Roll A width: 70 cm = 0.7 m

Roll A length: 4 m

Roll B width: 1 m

Roll B length: 3 m

Step 2:

Work out the surface area of each roll

Area = length × width

Roll A: 4 × 0.7 = 2.8 square metres

Roll B: 3 × 1 = 3 square metres

Roll B gives slightly more paper.

Step 3:

Work out the cost per square metre

Cost ÷ area = price per square metre

Roll A: £3.00 ÷ 2.8 = £1.07 per square metre

Roll B: £2.40 ÷ 3 = £0.80 per square metre

Roll B is better value overall.

Step 4:

Skills that Count check

If two rolls are similar in appearance but different sizes, always convert everything into the same units first. Then calculate the cost per square metre to make a fair comparison.

The Skills that Count

Understanding area and unit pricing helps you make smarter decisions without guessing.

Small savings add up, especially at Christmas.

This method works for wallpaper, flooring, and fabrics too. This is a Level 2 calculation that applies directly to everyday spending.
