Working Out Discounts in Multi-Buy Offers

Shops use multi-buy deals to make items look cheaper, but the savings are not always clear. Today’s scenario helps you determine whether a multi-buy offer provides genuine value.

This Level 1 example also helps develop the Skills that Count.

Your supermarket shows this deal:

Single price: £3.40 each

Offer: 3 for £9

Step 1:

Work out the cost of buying three at the single price

3.40 × 3 = 10.20

Step 2:

Compare with the offer price

Single total: £10.20

Offer total: £9

Saving: 10.20 − 9 = 1.20

Step 3:

Work out the saving per item

1.20 ÷ 3 = 0.40

Saving per item: 40p

Step 4:

Check if it is worth buying

Saving per item is 40p, which is just over 10 per cent of the original price.

The offer is good value only if you genuinely need three.

Skills that Count Check

Calculate the normal cost first, then compare.

Look at the total saving, not just the headline offer.

If you would not normally buy three, it might not be a real saving.

The Skills that Count

Understanding multi-buy deals helps you avoid overspending, especially during Christmas promotions when offers can look better than they are.

Look at a recent receipt, share your bargains and multi-buys, and ask if you really need them.
