Worked Example
Refer back to this example to build the Skills that Count.
RADIUS from the centre of a circle to the edge (in any direction!)
A circular garden has a radius of 6 metres.
Find the area of the circle.
Step 1
Write the formula.
Area = π × r²
Step 2
Substitute the radius.
Area = π × 6²
Step 3
Square the radius.
6² = 6 × 6 6² = 36
Step 4
Multiply by π.
Area = 3.14 × 36
Area = 113.04
Step 5
Write the correct units.
Area = 113.04 m²
Confidence Builder Questions
We’ve kept the unit measures to metres.
The formula stays the same for cms-feet-yards-kilometres etc.
Question 1
A circular pond has a radius of 5 metres.
Find the area of the pond.
Step 1 Write the formula.
Step 2 Square the radius.
Step 3 Multiply by π.
Question 2
A circular table has a radius of 8 metres.
Find the area of the table.
Step 1 Write the formula.
Step 2 Square the radius.
Step 3 Multiply by π.
Question 3 over to you 🙂
A circular field has a radius of 12 metres.
Find the area of the field. Show all your working out.
The Skill that Counts
The tricky bit...
The RADIUS is HALF the DIAMETER of a circle.
The DIAMETER is double, or 2 times the RADIUS!
Many learners find that working through just one question like this is enough to start rebuilding confidence.
