Working Out Postage Costs for Last-Minute Parcels.

Sending parcels close to Christmas can be expensive.

With Prime and direct delivery options, the post is sometimes forgotten.

Unlike Prime, with one set monthly fee, the post office has banded rates based on weights and sizes (dimensions, see Area and Shape resources).

Today’s Skill that Counts helps you calculate postage costs using weight bands and comparison.

You need to post a parcel weighing 1.8 kg.

Postage options are:

Up to 1 kg: £4.20

Up to 2 kg: £6.80

Special delivery: £9.50 (usually a faster tracked service)

Step 1: Identify the correct weight band

1.8 kg is more than 1 kg. It fits into the up to 2 kg band.

Step 2:

Select the standard postage cost

Standard postage cost = £6.80

Step 3:

Compare with special delivery

Special delivery = £9.50

Difference:9.50 − 6.80 = 2.70

Special delivery costs £2.70 more.

Step 4:

Make a practical decision

Choose standard delivery if time allows.

Choose special delivery if timing is critical.

Skills that Count Check

Always check weight bands carefully.

Going over a band increases cost sharply.

Compare speed against price.

The Skills that Count

Many Functional Skills exams look at decision-making.

Understanding postage costs helps you choose the right option, avoid overspending and manage last-minute Christmas tasks confidently.
